Topography, program, landscape and sun exposure. The intricate relation among these four elements creates the form and the space of La Serena, a private rural house that sits gently on the topography, standing on a mountain ridge that allows a 360º panorama of the surrounding mountainous region. The form is the result of a proposal on how to strengthen the relationship between the user and the landscape through the building. The displacement is encouraged, to travel from one room to the other, with the walk along the architecture establishing a contemplative relationship between man and the landscape. Thus, the views framed by the openings inside the house change from space to space.
It is accessed through the courtyard, which constitutes the house epicenter, a threshold, a transition between exterior and interior, a kind of ceremonial space that one must pass through before entering the domestic space. Due to the topographic and climatic conditions of the place, the courtyard also provides shelter from strong winds. The eastern façade, which is the most visible from the road, has small, discreet windows so as not to expose the privacy of the home. Towards the west, a series of generous windows not only promote the visual relation with the landscape but also establish the passive strategy of receiving the afternoon sun needed throughout the year in order to have comfortable temperatures inside the house. La Serena is an architectural proposal that seeks its foundations in the obvious, intended from the understanding of the place and the conception of a building as a means to promote and enhance the possible relations between the user and the territory.
