Located in one of Medellin’s most central and best-planned neighborhoods – Conquistadores – the tower is split vertically in two volumes to provide slenderness and reduce the sense of density; each one contains a different typology of apartments. Understanding the building’s environmental context, two dwellings per floor are developed in a north-south axis, allowing a natural cross ventilation that can be boosted throughout most of the year by the dominant winds that travel in that same direction. To reduce overheating, the openings towards the north and the south are provided with vertical sun-shading elements to prevent direct sun exposure in the mornings and afternoons, especially during the solstices. This is accomplished by pulling back the façade and creating a volumetric frame that provides shade and creates a transition zone, where terraces alternate from floor to floor.
